FCA Cupcake Wars Event

Battle plans were prepared.  Enemy lines were drawn. Weapons were gathered. Ammunition was secured.  This is WAR– the sixth annual Cupcake Wars! After months of baking, frosting, and decorating hundreds of cupcakes, the day of battle was upon FCA.  We began with prayer, but the students’ nerves were heightened. As they retrieved their ingredients and began measuring, the early morning’s excited chatter waned. Stand mixers hummed and whirled for hours while students busily measured ingredients creating their secret weapon– the perfect cupcake.  Students were assisted by the generals: Mrs. Frenette, Mrs. Northcutt, and Mrs. Adkins.

This friendly battle produced seven types of cupcakes focusing on the theme for May’s Fine Arts Night.  As we celebrate the diversity of cultures God created, students crafted and sculpted cupcakes from around the world: America’s Melting Pot, England’s Victoria Sandwich, Africa’s Zebra, India’s Chai Dahlia, Middle-Eastern Baklava, Italy’s Orange, and Mexico’s Dulce de Leche.

Hours ticked by, but as the final hour approached, everyone was scrambling.  Final decorations were added; cupcakes were gingerly placed on platters; students sighed one last deep breath.  At 2:00 the judging began. Teams introduced their cupcakes to the judges and explained how their cupcakes related to the theme by using historical references and Bible verses.  Randomly-selected elementary judges from each grade along with adults carefully evaluated each cupcake by looking, tasting, and smelling.

After a final count, the battle winners were determined– Dulce de Leche came in first and Africa’s Zebra themed cupcake (chocolate cupcake stuffed with oreo cheesecake filling and topped with vanilla buttercream and chocolate zebra stripes) landed in second!  These winning cupcakes will be available for purchase at Fine Arts Night in May. It may have been a long battle, but it was a sweet way to end quarter three at FCA!
